The FACT-Web programs offer free but very limited interaction with FactSage. This service may be discontinued at any time without notice. The programs are offered for demonstration purposes only. Many of the features available in the full FactSage package have been removed or diluted. You can also download the FactSage Education version for free, a restricted version of the full software and database packages.

Why is FactSage the best choice to support your materials research?

FactSage, together with its multiplicity of supporting databases, finds its origins in research carried out over a period of some 40 years in two leading centres in the field of materials thermochemistry. These are located at Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal, Canada, and at RWTH and GTT, Aachen, Germany.

Gunnar Eriksson, the author of the Gibbs energy minimization routine at the heart of the FactSage software, has received multiple awards for his work, including the dedication of special issues both of the CALPHAD journal and Zeitschrift für Materialkunde to papers presenting applications of his software. In the framework of FactSage, the user now has access to one of the world’s most powerful and reliable tools for carrying out calculations to investigate materials problems of all types.

With the significant advances that have been made over the last 30 to 40 years, computational thermochemistry is now a well-recognized and respected discipline in its own right and many technological advances have been and continue to be made using commercially available calculation software and databases.

The complexity of the materials required for today’s wide variety of technological applications presents a challenge to the materials developer, which cannot be met by experimentation alone. The demands on time and financial resources would be astronomical. It is for these reasons that thermodynamic calculations are now an essential component in the development of many new materials. This challenge has necessitated continual improvement in the capability and reliability of available thermochemical software, in particular, in the robustness of the Gibbs energy minimization routine dealing with the intricate physical and mathematical models now used in calculations of multiphase equilibria in multicomponent systems.

The databases accompanying the software must also meet the highest standards of reliability and be maintained as closely up-to-date as possible by inclusion of recently published information. This requires significant expertise and experience in the critical assessment of data.

Database Information

A large number of databases are available for use with FactSage. These cover almost the entire spectrum of materials and allow both simple and complex calculations relating to such topics as the production, application and chemical stability of different materials under different conditions of temperature, pressure and liquid or gaseous environment. The databases have been developed as a result of critical assessment of published thermodynamic and phase diagram data by international experts over a period of some 40 years. Continuous updating of the databases is undertaken to ensure that the most recent and reliable values are included.

The databases include not only a very large number of pure substances, but also alloy categories such as steels, light metal alloys, refractory alloys, copper alloys, lead alloys, noble metal alloys, ultra-pure silicon alloys, solder alloys, etc., as well as a very large general alloy database covering a very broad range of application categories.

The oxide and salt databases are the largest available. Critical assessment work has been continuous for many years, and many phase diagrams produced in their development have been published in the well-known Phase Diagrams for Ceramists “blue books”. The databases find wide application in metals production and refining, where oxide-based slags play a major role, as well as in the production of a wide range of glass-types and oxide-based ceramic materials.

Aqueous solution databases enable calculations relating to problems in hydrometallurgy and in corrosion to be investigated.

Further specialized databases have been developed for the nuclear, fertilizer and pulp and paper industries.
